New look to this blog

We have spent April completing a Spring-clean on the blog. Here is the new version created to be easier to read and to use. A big thank you to Paula Bearzotti for the work on all the design details!

New theme – Foreign Affairs

You will now find a new section with a new theme called Foreign Affairs which offers reflections on life as a foreigner and teaching a mother tongue as a foreign language. The articles in this section will be systematically published in French and English.

Choice of languages

There is also a new language feature in the Menu : click on the UK flag or Union Jack and you will be on the English homepage where you simply scroll down to read articles published in English; click on the French Tricolore and the homepage will be in French and, by scrolling down, you will find the articles published in French.

No translations using AI on this blog

French and English are the working languages on this blog. There is no automatic translation service on this blog and none of the articles are translated using artificial intelligence.

I author the texts in both languages so all the translations are my own. While AI is often used to give a cursory reading of texts in foreign languages we can’t otherwise understand, automatic translations are on the whole unreliable and I won’t impose them on you here.

Translation takes time. I don’t translate all the articles published here. When I choose to do so, you will notice certain liberties of tone and sometimes message in the movement from one language to another which I hope you will appreciate. They are deliberate on my part.

The Newsletter is coming back

I am pleased to be able to announce the return of the monthly newsletter for May. I plan to offer two versions – one in English and another in French.

As we get that going, please feel free to subscribe by putting your e-mail details into the pop-up which appears when you open this website. Once you confirm your subscription, I promise you will only get one e-mail per month informing you of the most recent publications.
